Engineering Contest Winners6th grade students in Mrs. Amy Lawrence’s RTI (Response-to-Intervention) Group recently participated in an engineering contest.  The project incorporated math measurement standards, encouraged creativity, and increased students’ engineering knowledge and skills.  To begin, students were challenged to create a paper airplane that would fly the longest distance.  After some experimentation, students tested their creations and then returned to the drawing board to make changes and improvements on their designs.  Some students found that adding small weights like paperclips or tape gave their planes a boost, while others relied on a sleek, simple design.  Students also discovered that the size of the plane affected its distance.  After much intense thought and effort, students came up with a final design of their own.  Then the planes were thrown, one by one, to see which would cover the most distance.  Making it to the final round were Landin Deatherage, Luke Lawrence, Kade Sawyers, and Wes Wainscott.  When the contest ended, the engineering challenge winner was Luke Lawrence, with his plane covering the entire distance of the Library.  2nd place in distance was Kade Sawyers, 3rd place—Landin Deatherage, and 4th place—Wes Wainscott.  Winners were presented with a trophy for their achievements in engineering.
